Liz Lisa 2013 vs. 2014 trunk carry fukubukuro comparison

I ordered a trunk carry from Liz Lisa during the 2013 fukubukuro sales and a trunk from the 2014 fukubukuro sales, and I noticed a few similarities and differences besides the color and print on the exterior. [I will not be comparing the fukubukuro contents at this time - only the suitcases themselves.]
This post is mostly going to be a picture comparison because the differences are mostly visual and have little to do with function.  It seems there have been a few improvements made to the 2014 trunk, and I'm happy to see they're not 100% the same :)

Different side handles

2014 slightly different wheel

2014 updated logo plaque

Different top handles

2013 trunk has pretty interior print

2014 trunk has slide-release buckles and 2 straps (improvement!)

Inside the 2014 LLxMM trunk only

On the 2013 trunk side handle only
2014 retractable handle slightly longer
seems like design of handle is also different
That's it! Here's some other photos with Liz Lisa items inside the trunks. Not necessarily the fukubukuro contents since I've sold some items, but the coats are right.

I've only used my 2013 trunk once so far and it functioned perfectly as a carry-on item. These trunks are not really meant to be check-in items unless you don't care if it comes out in the carousel with gauges in the exterior material lol. They're not extraordinary, out-of-this-world quality suitcases like something from TravelPro or Samsonite, but they're not meant to be. In my mind, the emphasis is on the outward appearance rather than A+ functionality, and objective achieved! I do like that they have the combination locks. I didn't change mine from the default, but it's still nice to have, and it helps to ensure that the tabs won't pop open.

  1. Nice comparison! To be honest, I really like the 2013 trunk more than this year's vintage trunk. The pink and white combination is simple but very cute and it has nicer interior too! - aah I wish I own that one. For me, the only consolation about this year's trunk is the vintage floral design, but the interior doesn't look very well made.

Like you said, they are built for aesthetics reasons and not practicality which is a reason why I'm very hesitant to bring the trunk along on a potential long-distance trip no matter how much I want to. I was inspecting my trunk the other day and I concluded that while it may survive bumpy road trips, I don't think it could handle air travels. :'(

    1. Yeah I feel the same way. I really like my 2013 trunk a lot. Unfortunately I don't really have any chances to road trip here so my only chance to use it is for air travel. The one time I've used it, it was perfect as a carry-on and I will continue to use it for that purpose in the future while keeping a mindful eye on it.

    1. Oh, sorry, of course you can! I just personally wouldn't because of how airlines treat check-in luggage. I prefer to use it as a carry-on so I can manage it myself.

    2. Oh God, I thought you were serious and it was legit not for check in purpose.
      Pray for my baby then ; w ;

    3. Haha no, I'm sure it would be okay if the airport staff handled it with above average care. Just a suggestion...maybe when you're at the check-in counter (after you're done rolling it to the desk or wherever), wrap it plastic (like the one the trunk came in). I'm sure that would help a lot to preserve the exterior. .

  3. Oooh, it's interesting to see the comparasons~ I guess on their own - you would really notice anything different but when you put them together they are very different~ ^.^

    1. I was surprised about the handle difference! I personally didn't see anything wrong with the 2013 height but maybe someone else did? And I really like the new buckles for the inside. They're much better in the 2014 trunk

  4. I live in the USA and cannot find any liz lisa suppliers. Do you know of any online?

    1. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "suppliers". Are you looking for some place you can buy Liz Lisa items wholesale? Or just buy Liz Lisa items in general?
I also live in the US and buy 98% of my Liz Lisa things directly from lizlisa.jp and use Tenso as a forwarding service. I find it to be cheaper than buying from MARUQ and I have a lot more selection this way.
MARUQ is a retailer of Liz Lisa and other Japanese brands in San Francisco. They have a FB and online shop.
There are pluses and minuses to each method and also many more ways to get Liz Lisa in the US, such as auction sites and shopping services, but I have had overwhelmingly positive experiences ordering directly from Japan with 20+ orders and that is my personal recommendation if you want current stuff.
If you want authentic wholesale items, I can't really help you there, but I think you'd have a pretty hard time getting that unless you have some insane connections.
Lmk if you have any questions. I'd be happy to help you in any way.

  5. OMG, these trunks are absolutely adorable! I'd never put them on the airplane cargo out of fear of damage, but carry-on... yes! ;o; So cute. Thanks for sharing, and glad I found your blog. ^^

  7. Thank you so much! I just recently discovered this suitcase. I'm dying for one for before I move into my college dorm :) I have a few questions! Where exactly did you get the pink one? I can't seem to find it on the Liz Lisa sit. Probably party because the language lol. Does it come in any other designs than these? These are the only ones I've seen so far. And how much did you pay for just the one? I really was hoping to not pay $300 like everywhere I have seen that carries them. Any help would be so amazing! <3 Thank you!

    1. These are both suitcases from Liz Lisa's fukubukuro/lucky pack sales in the past and will not be available in the future. The floral one is from 2014 and the pink one is from 2013. The luggages themselves are not sold individually on the website although you are able to purchase/preorder the lucky packs (for that year) during December. They usually have around 2 designs every year. I did a full review of the floral one from 2014 here [http://emiiichan.blogspot.com/2014/01/liz-lisa-x-my-melody-collaboration.html].
The cost of the trunk fukubukuro is usually 20,000yen and it comes with 9-10 clothing items inside (since they are lucky packs). I typically pay around $400-500 with customs and shipping to get them to me in the US. The ones you are finding for sale currently are people who are reselling the trunks so it makes sense that they would hike up the price since they are not available once the sales are over. You cannot buy the trunk individually.

  8. Do you know where I can buy the 2013 bag?xx

    1. Unfortunately, Liz Lisa does not have a habit of selling old/sold out/limited items from years past. Your best bet 3 years later is to find someone selling it secondhand.

  9. Hi Emi-Chan! I was actually wondering aren't they have the 109 limited at a rich vintage loose carry in a blue based? Do you have any recommendation on any second hand sites that I could actually look for it through?

    Thank you so much. ♥️

    1. I would assume it's just a lot harder to find and those who bought it actually wanted it. I don't peruse the secondhand sites very often but definitely the Japanese ones are the best for the bag since it was in store only.

  10. Thank you so much! I was actually found one at frail.jp but it was already sold out. You are actually the reason I was so into it! Since I've watch your videos regarding Liz Lisa items I thought to myself ok now that's what I've been missing! Those girly yet feminine and elegant fashion style! So thanks once again!

Hopefully there was a miracle and I could land myself on that blue based one!
